Certified internal auditor or CIA is a course offered by USA based Institute of internal auditors. Certified internal auditor is a highly recognized course in the field of internal audit. The basic objective is to teach you different areas on how to manage internal control of an organization. If you want a career in internal audit then we recommend you to do CISA along with CIA.
Qualification to Join Certified Internal Auditor or CIA Course
The basic qualification required joining CIA or certified internal auditor course is graduation. You can also join after your CA or CWA or CS. Many professionals we have seen in India are taking up this course after passing out CA or CWA or CS as their post qualification course.
IIA also have two exceptions to the qualification requirements for joining CIA course. Here are these two exceptions.
CIA Exam
The best part of certified internal auditor program or CIA is that exams are held in India and you are not required to travel all the way to USA for appearing exams like in the case of CPA.
With more than 500 locations worldwide, Institute of Internal Auditor or IIA gives you the flexibility of appearing in CIA exams from all over the world.
To appear for the CIA exams you are required to have the basic educational qualification or its equivalent from an approved college or institutions as discussed above.
After enrolling with IIA you can appear for the exam anytime during the year. There is no specific date or time to appear the exam. It’s a computer based online training where candidate has to answer online at a IIA authorized center.
Person is approved as an authorized center for conducting IIA exams. So you are required to inform them before about your timing of appearing the CIA exams.
There is a time frame for completion of the CIA course. You are required to complete the course within a time frame of 4 years from the date of your enrollment. If you are unable to do so then entire money paid towards the course will be forfeited.
Many candidates have misconception that they required to have 2 years prior experience before joining CIA. But actually to get the certification from IIA you would need 2 years of professional experience but you can appear for the exams prior to completing the experience requirements.
A candidate having master’s degree is required to have 1 year of experience instead of 2 years.
