In India, we have two major stock exchanges: the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Timing of both these stock exchanges are the same. Trading on the equity segments takes place on all days of the week except Saturdays and Sundays and holidays.
The market timing of the equities segment are:
- Morning Window for Block Deal: 08:45 AM to 09:00 AM.
- Pre-open session for Order entry & modification: 09:00 hrs to 09:08 hrs*
- Regular Trading Session: 09:15 hrs to 15:30 hrs
- Afternoon block deal session timings: 02:05 PM to 2:20 PM.
- Closing Session: 15.40 hrs to 16.00 hrs
*with random closure in the last one minute. Pre-open order matching starts immediately after close of pre-open order entry.
Pre-open trading sessions last from 9:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Orders can be placed between 9:00 a.m. to 9:08 a.m. Orders placed between this time period are given preference when the actual trading session begins.
Between 9:08 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., no orders can be placed. Modification to your order placed between 9:00 a.m. to 9:08 a.m. is not allowed after 9:08 a.m. Between 9:08 a.m. to 9:12 a.m., exchanges do order matching and calculate the opening price for a normal trading session. 9:12 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. is used as a buffer period for smooth transition of the pre-open session to the normal trading session.
The primary Indian share market timing starts from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Between this time period, transactions are executed based on a bilateral order matching system, wherein price determination is done through demand and supply forces. No exchange takes place after 3:30 p.m.
Between 3:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m., closing price is calculated using the weighted average of prices at securities trading from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in a stock exchange. In case of benchmark and sector indices such as Nifty, sensex etc. weighted average prices of listed securities are considered.
Between 3:40 p.m. to 4 p.m., bids for the following day’s trade can be placed. After 4:00 p.m., no transaction takes place. However, aftermarket orders can be placed, which would be allocated at opening market price the following day.
Muhurat trading
On diwali, the Indian stock market is generally closed for trading. However, one hour trading sessions are allowed from 5:30 p.m. to 6:40 p.m. as it is considered to be auspicious.
